File Types
Software applications recognize their appropriate files by the file extension - usually three or four characters following the period after the file name.  Some file type are more universal than others.  In other words, they can be read or opened in more than one application.  Following are some common file type extensions you will come across as you work with different software applications.
In the following chart, give the name of a common application than creates or works with each file type.
